Frequently asked questions

Is my International Driving Permit (IDP) legally valid in Vietnam?

This is a critical legal detail. Vietnam only recognises IDPs issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. If your IDP was issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention (which is common in countries like India, the US, and Australia), it is technically not legally recognised by local traffic police.

How we handle this: Many 3rd Party affiliates cater to legal Vietnam, recognised driving licenses. You can apply to them based on your local driving license through us. There is a nominal charge attached to it, which gives you the freedom to use it in more than 70 countries.

Hanoi/Saigon traffic is famously chaotic. How do we survive the gridlock?

The sheer volume of scooters in Vietnamese cities can look terrifying. To ensure your absolute safety, we start the ride from calmer regional towns. When we do enter municipal areas, we ride in a tight, highly coordinated single-file convoy led and bracketed by local marshals.

What kind of motorbikes do we use? Can I get a heavy Royal Enfield?

Unlike the Himalayas, heavy cruisers or 500cc adventure bikes are highly impractical for Vietnam’s tight mountain hairpins, narrow village single-tracks, and muddy routes. We provide lightweight, highly agile dual-sports and dirt bikes like the Honda XR 150L, Honda CRF 250L, or nimble semi-automatic scooters. These bikes are extremely reliable, easy to manoeuvre, and perfect for the terrain.

We are riding the famous Ha Giang Loop. How physically demanding is it?

The Ha Giang Loop is globally famous for a reason - it is breathtakingly beautiful but highly demanding. You will navigate hundreds of tight hairpin curves, steep mountain edges with sheer drop-offs, and sudden road construction patches. It requires sharp focus, steady clutch control, and good physical stamina. It is highly rewarding but not recommended for absolute beginners.

How does the weather change between regions, and what should we pack?

Northern Vietnam (where the best riding loops are located) can experience dramatic weather shifts.

Winter (Nov–Feb): Can be surprisingly cold (10°C to 15°C) and foggy in the mountains.

Summer (May–Sep): Hot, humid, and prone to sudden torrential downpours.

What to pack: High-quality, compact rain gear (jacket and pants) is mandatory year-round, along with a sweat-wicking base layer.

What is the accommodation like in the remote ethnic minority villages?

We believe in deep cultural immersion. Alongside comfortable boutique hotels in towns, we spend select nights in authentic ethnic minority villages (like the Tay or Hmong people). Here, we stay in traditional Stilt-House Homestays. You will sleep in clean, communal loft spaces with private mattresses, pillows, and mosquito nets. The highlight of these stays is the incredible, home-cooked communal family dinners with the hosts.

Do I need a visa for Vietnam, and can Touring Tours assist with it?

Most tourists require an e-visa to enter Vietnam. The process is fully online, highly straightforward, and usually takes 3–5 working days to issue a 30-day single-entry tourist visa. Our team will provide you with the exact itinerary details and hotel addresses needed to fill out your e-visa application smoothly.

How safe is the street food, and what will we eat on the road?

Vietnamese food is legendary, fresh, and incredibly healthy. Think piping hot Pho (noodle soup), crispy Banh Mi (baguettes), and grilled Bun Cha. Because the food is cooked fresh on order, the risk of food poisoning is very low. We eat at trusted local spots that are constantly busy, ensuring the ingredients are fresh daily. We also cater to vegetarians and vegans with excellent tofu-based local dishes.

Is personal medical/accident insurance mandatory for riding in Vietnam?

Yes, absolutely. You must purchase comprehensive international travel insurance that specifically covers motorcycle riding. Because of the IDP 1968 convention legal loophole, we recommend checking with providers who cover adventure activities regardless of local licensing technicalities. Our team can recommend specific global insurers who specialise in motorcycle adventure travel.

Can I bring a large suitcase, and what happens to our luggage?

You cannot load a hard-shell suitcase onto a motorcycle. You must pack your gear into a soft duffel bag or rucksack (up to 60L). All your heavy luggage goes straight into our support van, which follows the convoy throughout the tour. You will ride completely light, carrying only a small backpack for your daily camera gear, rain suit, and wallet.
